I’m watching Beyond Scared Straight. It’s my first time seeing it, and I’ve been watching it for hours. I can’t quit.
It seriously brings me to tears to see these teenagers live the way they live to deal with all the hurt and pain in their lives. Many of them have lost parents due to drugs and alcohol, prison, or death. Some are raised by grandparents. Some are on their own, roaming the streets looking for love in all the wrong places.
They harden their hearts to any kind of remorse or love. They think that they are the biggest and baddest thing walking on the earth. Then, most of them are broken down when they see the consequences for those things in other people’s lives. If they don’t quit, it will be them where those other people are at.
But that fear itself isn’t going to change them. It may for a little while but once they lose that fear, they will return to their old ways.
They need love.
They need hope.
They need the gospel.
They need Jesus.
For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” How then will they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how are they to believe in him of whom they have never heard? And how are they to hear without someone preaching? And how are they to preach unless they are sent? As it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the good news!” But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed what he has heard from us?” So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.
